With just days left until Mother’s Day, it’s time to figure out how to celebrate the moms in your life. Some mothers prefer a quiet, relaxing day to themselves, but others want to spend it getting quality time with the whole family. These are some creative ways to bring everyone together and make memories as a family.

  • Take an at-home trip - You don’t have to hop a flight to Paris to give mom a little taste of France, or help her enjoy any other destination that appeals to her. Start with a theme breakfast, like French croissants, then a picnic lunch, featuring food from that place, like French bread, cheese and fruit. Add some fresh flowers, a nice table cloth, and some music inspired by the destination and “voila” - you’re all set.
  • Share old memories - Look through old photos and home movies to take a trip down memory lane. Print out some pictures, write captions and stories about them and make a scrapbook gift mom will treasure.
  • Create a family comic strip - Think of an event or something funny that happened this year and turn it into a newspaper-style comic strip. Have the kids help with ideas and illustrating and don’t forget to include dialogue, a date and a title, like “Life with the Smiths.”
  • Host a lip-sync contest - Have everyone pick their favorite song and get up to give a performance lip-syncing the words. Family members can score each other, or you can all just do it for fun.
  • Recreate a spa day at home - Give moms the rest and relaxation they deserve with some DIY spa services. Kids can make coupons for them and mom can redeem them throughout the day for things like an hour alone to soak in a tub, a nap, a massage from a partner or the kids, or a manicure or pedicure.
  • Plant some flowers - Get out in the garden as a group and plant some flower seeds that grow fast and well in your area for a Mother’s Day gift that keeps growing.
  • Make sentimental artwork - One idea is to get everyone’s hand and foot prints in paint, label each one, and then do it again next year to see how much bigger the kids’ hands and feet have gotten.
  • Volunteer together - Spend time together giving back at a food bank, walking dogs at a shelter, or working in a community garden.
  • Make a family recipe - Pick one everyone loves and get the kids involved in prepping, setting the table, or designing a menu.
  • Have a dance party - Make a playlist with all mom’s favorite songs or give everyone a chance to DJ and play their picks. Bonus points for costumes and disco lights!
  • Have a family movie marathon - Pull out the pillows, blankets and mom-approved snacks, then watch the films you’ll all enjoy, from “Freaky Friday” to “Encanto” or all the Harry Potter movies.
