While not every kid is gonna grow up to be a concert pianist, or be the next Eddie Van Halen on guitar, plenty of parents think it’s important for kids to learn an instrument, and you may be surprised by what instruments parents want their kids to learn.
A new Guitar Center survey finds:
- 82% of parents think it’s important for kids to learn an instrument.
- 20% of parents say they would actually like their kid to become a musician.
- Overall, 47% of parents say their kids are currently taking music lessons.
- 55% think music education should be a priority at school.
- 26% think schools should encourage kids to learn an instrument, while 29% think it should be required in school.
- And it sounds like a lot of kids are into it, with only 9% of parents saying their kids have no interest in learning an instrument.
Now, when it comes to what instruments parents would like to see their kids learn, the answers are surprising.

- Violin (16%)
- Electric guitar (15%)
- Acoustic guitar (14%)
- Trumpet (14%)
- Flute (13%)
