  • There are some items that are prohibited on cruise ships and while some are obvious, like illegal drugs and guns, others can be surprising to first-time passengers.
  • According to Scott Campbell, AAA’s Cruise Relations Manager, the biggest no-nos are electrical appliances, especially things with heating elements like coffee makers and irons.
  • Things that look like firearms, like gun-shaped lighters, are also not allowed and neither are sharp items like knives and scissors.

Taking off on a cruise can be a relaxing way to spend a vacation, but nothing ruins the excitement quite like having your bag flagged by security as you board. The thing is, there are a lot of items you can’t bring on a cruise ship, the same way you can’t bring certain things on airplanes. Some of them are obvious, like illegal drugs and guns, but others can be surprising to first-time passengers.

The list of items prohibited on cruise lines often includes “everyday things that people wouldn’t think twice about,” says Scott Campbell, Manager of Cruise Relations at AAA. Having the banned items in your bag could result in having those things confiscated, so before you set sail, these are the items you don’t want to pack for your cruise.

  • Electrical appliances are the “biggest things” to keep in mind, according to Campbell. That doesn’t mean everything with a plug or a battery pack is off-limits on a ship, but things with heating elements, like clothes irons and coffee makers generally aren’t allowed.
  • Cabins may not have many outlets, but this expert says passengers can’t bring power strips with surge protectors, “You have to get ones that are cruise ship compliant.”
  • Don’t bother bringing your candles on your cruise either.
  • Weapons like firearms aren’t allowed, and neither are things that look like them, like gun-shaped lighters.
  • Sharp objects like knives and scissors are banned, but personal grooming items including safety razors are allowed.
  • CBD products, fireworks and hoverboards are typically not okay to bring on board either.
  • Campbell says passengers can’t bring on beer and hard liquor, but wine and champagne to drink in their cabin are okay, but the rules vary by cruise line.
  • If you do have a banned item in your bag, most of the time, it will be confiscated, but returned to you after the cruise.
