Airbnb’s “Excessive” List Of Rules Goes Viral

February 27, 2023

  • An Airbnb’s lengthy list of rules is going viral after a guest shared it on TikTok.
  • It shows signs all over the rental in Montauk, New York, some of which are reasonable, like asking occupants not to smoke or vape inside, but it goes further, asking not to apply perfume inside either.
  • The excessive part comes into play with rules like, “Please help to conserve water. Hot water shuts off after eight minutes.”

When you’re renting out your home to strangers, it makes sense to have some house rules in place to protect your space, as well as people’s safety. It’s not unusual for an Airbnb host to have rules about check in and out times, smoking, pets, visitors and parking. But one Airbnb’s lengthy list of rules is going viral after a guest posted it to the Airbnb Horror Story account, which has clips from both hosts and guests with bad experiences.

The person filming shows the interior of the rental in New York, which is plastered with small signs listing all the rules. “This Airbnb, this is just excessive,” they say in the clip. “This is in Montauk, yo. Let me show y’all this.” And the video pans around the home to show all the rules, including:

  • “No smoking and no vaping,” which is absolutely reasonable. But there’s another sign that reads, “Please do not spray or apply perfume, cologne or body oils inside … Please apply outside.”
  • A sign on the shower door reads, “Please help to conserve water. Hot water shuts off after eight minutes.”
  • “To avoid the growth of mold, please leave shower doors open after showering.”

It’s a small space, based on the TikTok video tour, but there’s no shortage of politely-worded rules inside. Commenters are weighing in on the crazy amount of rules:

  • “You know there’s cameras in this one,” writes one user.
  • “Bed collapses after 7.5 hours of sleep. Please do not excessively rest,” jokes another.
  • And a third comments, “I bet it’s probably triple the price of a hotel and they expect you to clean it after while still charging a $600+ cleaning fee 💀”
