Shopping Centers Named “Grinchiest” Place During Holidays

December 12, 2022

Nearly two-thirds of U.S. adults think malls and shopping centers cause the most stress during the holidays, new research shows.

  • Overplayed songs are another source of holiday stress, with “Jingle Bells” and “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” topping the list.
  • But on the flip side, things that make the holidays more delightful include “home cooking,” “a holiday card,” “a raise” and “people being kind to one another.”

‘Tis the season for lots of shopping, but it turns out, a lot of people aren’t fans of the seasonal task. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of U.S. adults think malls and shopping centers cause the most stress over the holidays, according to new research. A poll of 2-thousand finds that two-thirds say shopping centers are actually the “grinchiest” place of all during the holidays.

The survey also reveals:

  • Beyond the mall, other places that induce the most stress this time of year include airports (59%), and the post office (58%).
  • People’s top pet peeves at these stressful locations include crowds (60%), long lines (53%) and noise (52%).
  • “Grinchy” places are also lurking online and participants say the stress-inducing social media platforms are Facebook (43%), Instagram (40%) and TikTok (36%).
  • While online, nearly half (48%) say they’re overwhelmed by shopping ads and insensitive or negative content.
  • Another source of holiday stress? Overplayed Christmas songs, including “Jingle Bells” (25%), “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” (25%) and “It’s Beginning to Look at Lot Like Christmas” (23%).
  • Fortunately, participants say there are some things that can turn your mood from “grinchy” to “joyful,” including getting a surprise sale or discount (45%), getting an unexpected gift (43%), or the simple pleasure of enjoying a hot cup of coffee (39%).
  • Things that make the holidays more delightful include “home cooking,” “a holiday card,” “a raise,” and “people being kind to one another.”

  • At least when you’re shopping online you don’t have to deal with crowded parking lots or long lines!
  • What do you think the most “grinchy” place is during the holidays?
  • What holiday songs do you think are overplayed? Which ones do you not hear enough?
