UK Café Charges Sliding Scale Prices Based On Politeness

October 18, 2022

  • Chaii Stop, in Preston, England, just introduced a sliding scale of prices based on how nice or rude a customer is being.
  • If a customer orders their drink by saying “Hello, Desi Chai please” they’ll only be charged about $2.12 for their drink, but if they are rude and just say “Desi Chai,” their price will go up to $5.59.
  • The cafe’s owner, Usman Hussain, says he hopes the new sliding scale brings “good vibes only” to his business.
  • He says so far he hasn’t had to charge the rude price, but he does give a customer a warning before he does.

These days we are constantly hearing about baristas who are being abused by rude customers. Well, one café in the UK thinks they have found a solution to the problem.

Chaii Stop, in Preston, England, just introduced a sliding scale of prices based on how nice or rude a customer is being. For example if a customer orders their drink by saying “Hello, Desi Chai please” they’ll only be charged about $2.12, if they are a little less polite, just saying ‘Desi Chai, please,” they’ll be charged $3.35, and if they are rude and just say “Desi Chai,” their price will go up to $5.59.

The cafe’s owner, Usman Hussain, says he hopes the new sliding scale brings “good vibes only” to his business, noting, “I think it’s a nice reminder to use your manners, because unfortunately sometimes we do need reminding,” adding, “We’ve never struggled with rude customers, but since having the sign, people are definitely coming in more open and having a laugh with us.”

Hussain got the idea from an old Facebook post from an American café. And apparently the discount seems to be working, with Hussain noting they have yet to sell a $5.59 chai, although he does warn them about the price change. He shares, “If a customer doesn’t use their manners I point to the sign, and they immediately ask again more politely.”

“At the end of the day you never know what someone is going through to make them act rude, but it helps them to drop their guard,” he adds. “It gets them talking – like an icebreaker – and that’s what we’re all about. Any negativity gets left at the door.”
