Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day

This year, January 17th is Martin Luther King Jr. Day (celebrated on the third Monday in January)!Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A civil rights leader who devoted his life to the pursuit of lawfulness and equality for everyone, Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream Speech” has become the stuff of legend. Given in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. on August 28, 1963, Dr. King’s passionate words were filled with hope and the belief in basic human decency.

Fifteen years after his assassination, President Ronald Reagan signed the King Holiday Bill into law (November 1983). Now, every year, on the third Monday of January, we have the opportunity as Americans to reflect on one of our country’s great activists – not as different people of different races – but as the people we are capable of being.

So while you’re enjoying your day off, at least take some time to think about the message of Dr. King – and what you can do to make the world around you a little kinder, a little fairer – and most importantly, a little more peaceful.
