Canadian teacher is recognized for her commitment to her students and the community.
Maggie MacDonnell teaches at a school in the Inuit village of Salluit, Quebec, up in the Canadian Arctic - this place is so remote, you can only get there by plane. And she’s made such an impact there, she just won a $1-million Global Teacher prize at a ceremony in Dubai.
MacDonnell was part of a group of 10 finalists, chosen from 20,000 nominations and applications from 179 countries. She’s been teaching there for six years and has been recognized for “changing the lives of her students and transforming her community.”
The teacher has focused on emphasizing “acts of kindness” and has helped set up a fitness center, a community kitchen, and created a life-skills program for girls to lower the teen pregnancy rate there. MacDonnell plans to use the money to help “reawaken a love for the land” with the young people.

When her daughter was arrested for underage drinking during spring break, this mom did the unexpected and sent a ‘thank you’ note.
After one teen was arrested for underage drinking on a Florida beach during spring break, her mom did something unexpected - she wrote the local sheriff a thank you note. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office received the anonymous note and shared it on their Facebook page.
"The arrest scared the HELL out of her and I'm hoping she learned her lesson,” the letter reads. “The reason that I am sending this is that every officer that I talked to or that I could hear in the background talking to her was so nice.”
The mom praises the officers for being respectful and reassuring her that her daughter would return home safely, which was a huge comfort since she was hundreds of miles away. "In this day, 'cops' are getting a bad rap,” she writes. “So, I wanted to say 'thank you.'"
