With the new school year starting next month, local law enforcement agencies are hiring crossing guards. They include the Village of Palm Springs.

Police Chief Tom Ceccarelli tells us they're taking applications now online.

"You're out there with the kids and a lot of them do appreciate just being, you know, making sure we're keeping them safe. If anyone's interested, we pay $15 an hour and it's a couple hours out of every day and it is a rewarding job."

He says it's a great job for retirees and they have some of the parents of kids attending school who have some spare time during the work week.

Chief Ceccarelli says the police department also needs to hire six new officers, which is a higher number than normal.

"Usually we don't have that many openings, but because we added some positions to cover some of our annexation areas and things like that. That's why we have those openings."

He says officers with experience are welcome, along with people looking for a new career in law enforcement.
