Miami-Dade School Board Votes To Formally Ban Arming Teachers

A South Florida school district is firing up a discussion about one of Tallahassee's most controversial topics this past legislative session.

Last month state lawmakers expanded the Guardian Program giving school districts the power to let teachers pack heat, today Miami-Dade school board members passed a board item formally declaring their opposition to the idea.

While after the Parkland tragedy, the district's superintendent and some board members were quick to vow to keep guns out of the hands of teachers, but no formal action was taken.

"This item will provide a level of clarity to the community members, to our teachers, to our parents and to our students as it relates to our position on this very sensitive and somewhat controversial issue," says school board member Dr. Steve Gallon III.

He goes on to say, "I think it's a very, very bad mix and I'm adamantly opposed to it, and I think it runs counter to what schools are all about."

His measure immediately had four co-sponsors.

Broward school board members also won't let trained teachers bring guns in classrooms.
