Hillsborough School District Ends Summer Workouts After 14-Year-Old's Death

Hillsborough County school officials are stopping further summer-break conditioning sessions for student-athletes after a 14-year-old collapsed and died.

Hezekiah Walters was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital this week after a team practice for Tampa's Middleton High School.

The county's school district says they will need to conduct an inquiry of safety procedures at each school before workouts could resume.

Tanya Arja, a spokesperson for the county's public schools said,"We are devastated by the death of one of our students. This student was an amazing young man who was loved by his friends, teachers and staff at school."

According to an article by CNN, Heatstroke and exertion-related heart attacks caused nine out of 13 football-related deaths in 2017.
