Senior Community In The Dark, Residents Trapped In Apartments Without Power

Senior citizens are being trapped inside their Pembroke Pines apartments without access to elevators, after officials say more than half of a large retirement community is still left without power following Hurricane Irma.

Pembroke Pines police spokeswoman Amanda Conwell says officers have been on the scene because some of the 15,000 residents at Century Village, located at 1551 SW 125th Terrace, are vulnerable and "we are concerned about their welfare."

Century Village is a senior community, comprised mostly of people over 55 years of age.

When Hurricane Wilma hit in 2005, many buildings lost power for eight days.

Residents of Century Village fear that could be the case with Irma.

Earlier Wednesday, five people died at a Hollywood nursing home, after their facility had been left without power following Hurricane Irma.
